A typical example of IT Service Management is an employee logging into a portal to request access to an application or order a new laptop. When the correct form is filled in and sent, it will trigger a number of processes in the background. Often, a message will be sent to the immediate manager to approve that the employee can get a new laptop before the order goes ahead. Then there may be automatic tasks that check what's in stock, what the expected delivery date is, etc. An order can also be handled manually by a case manager, in which case the order is automatically routed to the right team based on expertise, location or other predetermined criteria.
